The Mottville Fire Co Inc. has responded to 139 alarms as of July 31. For the month of July the response broke down as follows. Emergency medical calls 7, Motor vehicle accident 1, CO detector in alarm 2, alarm system activation 1 and response to our neighboring fire departments 7. 221 total fire fighters responded at an average of 11.6 per alarm. Members spent 104 man hours away from home at the alarms. The Mottville Fire co members joined with the Skaneateles fire department in a bus extrication class on one of the hottest Saturdays of this summer. Texas Battalion chief Ron Moore taught members techniques in taking a school bus apart in order to extricate any children safely.

Residents in the Mottville area may notice work going on in and around the fire station. After nearly 40 years its time to make a few repairs and upgrades. The heating and lighting systems are being upgraded. Concrete is being replaced in the station floor drain and door openings. Outside we will have a new sidewalk along the building.

I would like to remind all people that read this article the Mottville Fire Co still offers our "help us find you" reflective address signs. We will make one for anyone who wants to be found easier during an emergency. The cost is $15.00 for each 2 sided sign. Contact 685-6324 for your sign. Join the fun at the 19th annual Mottville Golf outing at 9am September 4th at the Links at Sunset Ridge in Marcellus. Contact 224-2755 for details and sign up. The Mottville Fire Co. is professionally staffed by volunteers.

The members of the Mottville Fire Company responded to 17 alarms for the month of May. They were seven emergency medical , 2 motor vehicle accidents, one fire alarm activation and 7 calls to assist our neighboring fire departments. 197 total fire fighter spent 167.4 man hours away from home responding to the emergencies. Fire fighters averaged 10.3 per alarm totaling 105 calls for 2010 to date. May was a busy training month finishing up our annual OSHA refresher training, Vehicle extrication and drilling on vehicle fires.

Mottville fire fighters Chris Soprano and Kevin Shon have recently completed New York State Emergency Medical Technician (EMT) . This class has taken up 2 nights a week class time starting back in January along with hospital time spent doing hands on learning. The addition of 2 EMT's will be a big addition to the department and our community so when you see them say thanks and congratulation.

With the nice summer weather upon us its time to mark your calendar on September 4th at 9 AM for our annual golf outing. This years tournament will be held at The Links at Sunset Ridge in Marcellus. For information and sign up contact tournament director Mike Baker at 224-2755. The Mottville Fire Co closes out April responding to 22 alarms. They were 6 emergency medical, 2 property damage vehicle accidents and 13 calls to assist our neighboring fire department.293 total fire fighters responded spending 298.3 man hours away from home. Joint training continues as Mottville, Skaneateles and Elbridge fire departments did some live fire and search and rescue at the Belgium Cold Springs Fire training tower. The combined training provides the chance for the departments to work with each other, learning and teaching so when the real one hits we are all better prepared to work together during any emergency .

A special congratulations goes out to Mottville Fire fighters Scott Thomas and Nate North for completing the nearly 100 hour state Fire Fighter One course. This course teaches each person how to be an interior fire fighter along with haz-mat response and 15 hours of initial OSHA training. The members will now learn the operating guide lines of our department before heading out on there own. The Mottville Fire Company is professionally staffed by volunteers.

The Mottville Fire Company closes the door on winter by responding to 23 alarms for March. They were 2 Carbon Monoxide investigations, 2 property damage auto accidents, 10 medical alarms, 1 public service, 2 alarm system activations and 6 calls to assist our neighboring fire departments. Average fire fighters per alarm was 11.6 while spending 209 man hours away from home. Total 2010 alarms is 64 as of March 31. The Mottville , Skaneateles and Elbridge fire departments were given a tour of the expanded Welch Allyn facility in preparation for any incident that may occur. The tour included the new and old portions of the plant. This type of familiarization will be a great help in the event we are called on for an emergency situation at the plant. I would like to thank our tour guides Dave Fox and Don McLean. Also the refreshments following the tour for all was appreciated.

I would like to recognize Mottville Fire Fighter John Sheldon for his recent appointment as the departments Safety Officer. John has been a member for over 16 yrs and has held many positions in the department including Lieutenant, Captain, Assistant Chief to name a few. John brings with him experience and desire for safety in the fire service. So when you see John wish him well and congratulations.

With the warming temps and dry days the yard debris starts to pile up and sometimes the fastest way to dispose of all the waste is to have a controlled burn. Before you strike the match this spring you should all know It is illegal to open burn from March 16 - May 14th. This law is for all open burning. The law was put in place due to the increased risk of wildfires during the spring . For information on the law check the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation web site for part 215: open fires. Further questions check with your codes officer or your fire chief.

A great big thank you to the more than 470 visitors we had at our annual spring pancake breakfast on the 14th. You all made it a success. Congratulations to Fran Hares as our 50/50 winner this spring. I hope to see all and your friends at our fall breakfast.

!!!! NOTICE !!!!

!! CARBON MONOXIDE DETECTORS ARE NOW STATE LAW !!

    ___________________________________________________________________________

The Mottville Fire Co. moves toward spring after responding to 15 alarms for February. The alarms were 4 emergency medical, 2 property damage vehicle accidents, 1 investigation, 8 mutual aid calls to assist our neighbors. Firefighters spent 71.7 man hours away from home while averaging 11.1 fire fighters per alarm. Total 2010 alarms as of Feb. 28th were 41. Training for the month consisted of a joint venture with the Skaneateles and Elbridge fire department last Monday night. The departments trained in ventilation, search and rescue along with an obstacle course set up in the fire station. Our departments have made a commitment for more joint training this year.

The Mottville Fire Co would like to remind everyone that now the installation of carbon monoxide ( CO ) detectors has become law in the state of New York. I would strongly recommend all residents installing CO detectors in their sleeping area and living area. These detectors will give early warning in case of an appliance malfunction that may produce CO into the living quarters. If you have any question on placement of a CO detector please contact your fire officials.
Its time to mark your calendar to March 21st for the Mottville Fire Co annual spring pancake breakfast. The meal runs from 0700 - 12 noon at the Mottville fire station on Frost st. I look forward to seeing everyone at the breakfast. The Mottville Fire Co. is professionally staffed by volunteers.

FINAL ALARM

On February 09, 2010 the final alarm was struck for Mottville Fire Company member Hervey "Bud" Atwater. At approximately 3:30 pm our brothers from the Elbridge Fire Department and the Jordan ambulance responded to assist Bud in his time of need. With all of today's training and medications available to our first responders it was not enough . I personally would like to thank the members from both organizations that responded to this emergency, I know everyone did everything they could do .

Bud was a 45 year member of the Mottville fire Company, holding offices of President, Assistant Chief, Fire Captain and Fire Police Captain. Bud was recently selected as our 2009 fire fighter of the year.

Bud spent many hours each year in our local cemeteries placing flags and markers on the graves of past fire company members. This passion he had for remembering our past members was shown daily in Bud's way of caring about members past and present. Bud would regularly come to a member at a meeting and hand over a small box or package. In the package the member would find a collectable ax or plaque or anything symbolizing the fire service. Bud gave me a die cast fire detailed chopper as I have a motor cycle and ride as a hobby they both went together well. It was a special gift. We would regularly talk about another love of Bud's , NASCAR. Bud was a follower of driver Mark Martin and spoke often of Marks success . He always had an idea of how he could get the win.

For Hervey "Bud" Atwater your final alarm has sounded and you will be missed but never forgotten .Our hearts and prayers are with you brother and all of your family.

A RECORD MONTH

The Mottville Fire Company closes out 2009 on a record pace. The fire company responded to 37 alarms for the month of December, more than any month in its history. The alarms broke down as follows, 1 investigation, 2 Alarm system activations, 2 personal injury auto accidents, 6 property damage accidents, 17 calls to assist our neighboring fire departments. Total fire fighters responding were 503 while spending 358.5 man hours away from home and averaging 13.6 fire fighters per alarm. The year ending numbers for 2009 were 3161 total fire fighters responding. Members spent 2038.1 man hours away from home while averaging 13.3 fire fighters per alarm for the year. Total 2009  alarms were 237.

Some of the accomplishments the fire company has achieved this year. We took delivery of our new Rescue Pumper built by E-One. This truck came equipped with an on board generator, 1000 gals of water , a built in hydraulic rescue tool system ( jaws of life ) capable of operating 3 tools at the same time. We also received a new Ford F-250 squad pick up used for personnel and equipment transport during alarms, drills and training classes. The" help us find you" address sign campaign is still on going and if you have not ordered your sign yet give me a call at 685- 6324 for your sign.

In the training department, congratulations go out to new members Chris Soprano, Scott Thomas and Nate North for completing NYS class Scene Support Operations which qualifies them as exterior fire fighters. The class covered all the basics in fire fighting over 8 weeks of class. We are looking forward to many joint drills with our neighboring fire departments this coming year.

The fire company monthly top responder is a familiar one, Dan Sheldon tops the list again this month responding to 34 of the 37 alarms for the month. Dan was again our top yearly responder for 2009 making 214 of the 237 alarms . A big thank you to Dan for his dedicated time for the fire company. Mottville Fire Company is professionally staffed by volunteers.
